He has been the Coordinator of the master course on Urban Mobility Management at the University of Coimbra, and currently acts as Coordinator of the Working Group on Transport and Mobility of the Regional Spatial Planning Program of the Centro Region in Portugal (under preparation).

Joao holds a degree in Civil Engineering (2003) and a PhD in Spatial Planning and Transportation (2009) from the University of Coimbra. In the past 15 years, Joao has successfully moved from academia to the industry (in 2009, to lead the innovation activities of a corporate group with businesses in engineering, construction, and real estate) and back to academia (in 2015-16, as an invited professor within the scope of the MIT-Portugal Program). Joao has been a visiting scholar at the University of Toronto (Toronto, Ontario) and at MIT (Cambridge, Massachusetts).

Joao’s research addresses innovation, transport planning, and spatial planning. In particular, he focuses on the integration of planning decisions about facility location and transport network design (TOD, 15-minute city, etc.), the diffusion and acceptance of transport innovations, and the integration of new mobility solutions under the mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) framework. In his research work, he employs a wide variety of techniques, from geographical information systems and statistical analysis to mathematical modeling and optimization.

He has published in top scientific journals in these fields such as Transportation Research Part A Policy and Practice, Research in Transportation Business and Management, European Transport Research Review, Sustainable Cities and Society, Environment and Planning B, Computer‐Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, and European Journal of Operational Research, among others, and has been involved in research and innovation actions within the frameworks of Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (the Portuguese national funding agency for science, research and technology), COST Action, and EIT Urban Mobility.

Research interests:

  • integrated planning of urban development and transport network (TOD, 15-minute city, etc.)
  • accessibility planning (facility location, proxiity-centered accessibility, etc.)
  • new mobility solutions (shared mobility, MaaS, etc.)
  • innovation (diffusion and adoption of innovative solutions)
  • optimization and simulation
