1.92 - Momentum – Mobility Management for the Urban Environment
Project Description
After the completion of the MOMENTUM project, it can be clearly stated that mobility management is now widely recognized and accepted in the European Union and identified as a key policy measure to deliver a more sustainable environment. The way this has been achieved has two important main dimensions. On the one hand a group of researchers has worked on the more fundamental aspects of mobility management, while on the other hand another group of demonstration projects throughout Europe has tested mobility management concepts and strategies in practice. In its first stage of life (1996), MOMENTUM produced, a thorough inventory of the State-of-the-Art of mobility management throughout Europe and even other parts of the world. Concepts, strategies and tools are categorised and evaluated in qualitative and quantitative terms, including criteria for success and a description of deficiencies and new possibilities. Next to this, the document on State-of-the-Art of mobility management has been updated (towards the end of 1998) to a considerable extent, aiming to describe the (multi-national) developments in mobility management from 1996 onwards. In 1997, MOMENTUM completed its next project deliverable “Blueprint for Mobility Centres”, presenting concepts and strategies for mobility management to all parties involved in transport issues. MOMENTUM developed 'full service' and integrated concepts for mobility centres, addressing all kinds of traffic (including free-time and leisure traffic) and providing a whole range of activities. These integrated concepts consider all modes of transport and all transport purposes (including goods transport). Meanwhile, the 13 demonstration projects throughout the EU and Switzerland have come into their implementation phase, testing and evaluating the recommendations of this blueprint. This way of demonstrating and applying mobility management strategies and tools as case studies was carried out in a number of mobility centres. MOMENTUM has tested new mobility management strategies in a number of (new) mobility centres that are commuter trip based, centre based or based on “other trips”. Each of the 13 demonstration sites focused on a number of specific aspects of mobility management.
