Project Description

The aim of this project is to study the viability of new markets and services in Douro’s Inland Waterway (DIW). This project is conducted through three main lines of research:

• Characterization of the current situation of transport in DIW and benchmarking against the most relevant waterways in Europe;
• Prospective analysis of freight transport in DIW;
• Compatibility with increasing tourist activities.

Therefore, the project includes the study of the prospective demand of freight and tourist navigation, as well as the evaluation of the infrastructure’s capacity under different circumstances (before and after investments), with the ultimate goal of understanding the conditions under which the coexistence between freight and tourism in DIW is partially or fully achievable.
