4.26 - GENETIPAV-D - A Deterministic Segment-Linked Pavement Management System

Project Description

The overall aim of this project is to create a finished tool for road pavement management. This will involve a deterministic segment-linked optimization model as the way to allow optimally allocation of public funds and, at the same time, keeping the road network at required condition levels. The link with a Geographical Information System (GIS) will allow a more comprehensive implementation of the main management tool.

To achieve that aim, the objectives of the project are:

  • Selection and calibration of deterministic pavement performance models from those used by road administrations around the world;

  • Development of a deterministic segment-linked optimization model to be used within the Pavement Management System (PMS);

  • Adaptation of a heuristic method, based on genetic-algorithm principles, to solve the optimization model;

  • Integration of the PMS analysis modules with the GIS capabilities, resulting on the finished tool for road pavement management;

  • Application of the PMS tool developed to the Lisbon road network. Discussion of results with Road Administration Officials of City Council, with the aim of establishing final management tool;

  • Validation of the deterministic pavement performance models used within the optimization model, using pavement data about Lisbon's road network, which will be collected for next years.

A PMS, applied throughout a validate and powerful instrument, will be of great importance for optimizing the use of resources both for national road and urban road networks. It also allowed the research team to start research on the utilization of GIS for input-output operations in that kind of problems.
